Dark Garden

y The Dark Garden is considered the oldest city park in Narva. It sits on the grounds of the Victoria bastion, towering over the Narva River. Within the Dark Garden, several monuments can be found, along with a pavilion offering stunning views. Essentially, a large part of the park serves as a viewing platform, from which one can admire the Ivangorod Fortress.

History of The Dark Garden

The Dark Garden was established in the mid-19th century, initially envisioned as a public urban square. The park was named after the Dark Gates, situated between the Victoria and Pax bastions, and part of the city’s fortification system. Originally, the garden was located at the foot of the Victoria bastion, eventually expanding across its entire area.

Today, the Dark Garden is a fully pedestrian zone with lush greenery. Visitors can stroll under the shade of trees, illuminated by vintage lanterns in the evening. The park’s pavilion offers a perfect spot for Instagram-worthy photos, among many photogenic places throughout.

A monument dedicated to Russian warriors who fell during the Siege of Narva in the Great Northern War is located in the Dark Garden. It was erected in 1853 and moved to its current location in 1882. There is also a memorial stone for Albert Üksip – an Estonian artist and botanist native to Narva.
