Monument to Russian soldiers fallen in 1704

The monument to Russian soldiers who fell during the Siege of Narva in 1704, during the Northern War, is located in the Dark Garden on the Victoria Bastion. It is also known as the Peter’s Cross. It consists of an iron cross standing on a square dolomite base, enclosed by corner pillars, a metal barrier, and a chain between them.

Monument History

The first monument in the Dark Garden was placed on the grave of Russian soldiers in 1704. It was a typical iron cross, customary for such memorials at the time. In 1882, the monument was moved to its current location.

The monument underwent restoration twice. Extensive work was carried out in 1956 and 1982. In 1996, the monument was dismantled, and a replica of the cross was installed in its place. After that, significant restoration work was carried out in 2018.

Today, the monument stands as it was originally intended. A gazebo is located a few dozen meters from it. Now, free access to the monument is available from all sides.
