The monument to Karl Ernst von Baer in Tartu is located in Toomemäe Park. The scientist is depicted in a thoughtful pose, sitting in a chair atop a high pedestal and reading a book. The area around the monument is enclosed by a metal fence.

History and Description of the Monument

The monument to Karl Ernst von Baer in Tartu was installed in the autumn of 1886. Its unveiling took place on November 28, timed to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the scientist’s death. The monument’s creator was Alexander Opekushin. It’s worth noting that von Baer’s monument is one of the most majestic monuments in Estonia’s student capital.

Tartu also hosts the von Baer Museum, located in the house where the scientist spent his final years. It’s also noteworthy that von Baer’s portrait was featured on the Estonian national currency—the kroon, which was phased out in 2011. The scientist’s portrait appeared on the 2-kroon note.

Karl Ernst von Baer is considered the founder of comparative anatomy and embryology. This man of science received his doctoral degree from the University of Tartu, where he also spent the last years of his life.
